IMO Secretary General Briefing to Observers

IMPA was invited to a briefing for non-governmental organisations by the IMO Secretary General, Arsenio Dominguez on 6 September 2024. These briefs are an important opportunity for the IMO Secretary General to keep observers like IMPA informed about developments at IMO, and in its priorities. Issues discussed included:

·         The situation in the Red Sea, including the welfare and safety of seafarers in general and those of the MV GALAXY LEADER in particular, and MV SOUNION

·         Actions by the IMO to address situations where seafarers have been detained but due process has not been followed, and the success so far achieved.

·         The future of the IMO Goodwill Ambassador Scheme.

·         A new Code Of Conduct For Delegates, Observers And Other Participants At IMO Meetings, Events and Activities to prevent harassment, including sexual harassment

·         The deployment of new technology to support IMO meetings, including enhanced transparency.

The IMO Secretary General reaffirmed his commitment to not speaking at any event where women were not represented, and informed that this policy applies to all IMO staff.
